Appreciation: Paul Newman

While there are more newsworthy goings-on today, we'd like to add to the appreciations of Paul Newman who died  over the weekend at the age of 83 after a long battle with cancer. The actor was as legendary for his movies and dashing good looks as his successes in philanthropy, business and race car driving. Befittingly, many different kinds of magazines saluted the actor who was dubbed "Quite a Guy" in 1982 by Time magazine. Here are a few of our picks for Paul Newman appreciations.

Bailout Bill Fails in the House

The bailout bill needed 218 votes to pass but came up short with 205 votes. According to BusinessWeek 66 Republicans voted for the bill, while 132 voted against it; 141 Democrats voted for the bill, while 94 voted against it. Entertainment Weekly Spoofs New Yorker Cover

This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly features Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert spoofing the now infamous New Yorker magazine Obama parody cover that came out in July. Along with the cover photo, EW interviews funnymen Colbert and Stewart about the election coverage--no joke.

2008 Best Magazine Cover Finalists

Earlier this week the American Society of Magazine Editors announced the finalists for the 2008 Best Cover Contest. For the third-annual installment, 94 magazines were judged and 27 finalists in eight categories were chosen. With six nods, New York Magazine has the most nominations.

Best Allergy Info: Prevention Magazine

While springtime gets a lot of credit for being the worst season for allergy sufferers, according to the CDC 75 percent of seasonal allergies occur in late summer and early fall; the culprits: weeds. Ragweed is the most widespread offender but others like sagebrush and tumbleweed are also guilty. Allergies—an overreaction of the immune system to allergens--are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness among Americans. That means more than 50 million people suffer from seasonal or year-round allergies each year. 

So what do you do when your eyes start itching, your sinuses get congested and your cough just won’t quit? After reading a stack of magazines and their websites, we found the most info at Prevention magazine. Topics include natural ways to ease and prevent allergies, over the counter vs prescription drugs and allergy risk factors. Runners-up in the allergy info department are Natural Health magazine and Real Simple magazine.

People Magazine Best & Worst Dressed: A Look Back

As we mentioned earlier this week People magazine’s annual “Best & Worst Dressed” issue hits stands today. This year’s arrival of the list prompted us to wonder how celebrities had fared fashion-wise in years past.  Just like this year’s list, it hasn’t always been pretty. Below we take a look back at a few “Best & Worst Dressed” issues starting with the debut in 1980.

Best Dressed Revealed by People Magazine

Singer Fergie changed her tune--her fashion tune that is--and made it onto People Magazine's "Best Dressed" list for 2008, the magazine revealed today. Also receiving "Best Dressed" kudos are actresses Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker and Charlize Theron. Michelle Obama, who Vanity Fair magazine already dubbed a fashion leader earlier this year, also made the list. On the "Worst Dressed" list are actresses Lucy Lui and Patricia Arquette who misstepped with an outrageous red carpet dress and bright orange and aqua boots, respectively. Look for the double-issue of People magazine on stands Friday.

Marie Claire Editorial Staff Star in Reality Series

In March a new reality series, er documentary series,"Running in Heels," debuts on the Style Network. The cameras will follow the editorial staff--including editors, writers and interns--of Marie Claire magazine at work and in their personal lives.
