Publishers & Distributors Squabble Over Magazine Delivery Fees
Magazine wholesalers Source Interlink Distribution and Anderson News Co, which represent an estimated 50 percent of the U.S.'s retail magazine sales, recently demanded that publishers pay 7 cents per copy on top of existing financial arrangements by Feb. 1 to deliver their product.
Publisher Time Inc. told the wholesalers it will find other distribution channels rather than meet the wholesalers' demand for higher fees.

Shelter Magazine Domino Shuttered
Today publisher Conde Nast announced it is shuttering Domino magazine. The once promising home title launched in 2006 is the fifth home magazine to shut down lately--Meredith's Country Home, Time Inc.'s Cottage Living, Hearst's O at Home and Hachette Filipacchi's Home magazines were shuttered last year.
In a statement Conde Nast blamed the recession for closing the magazine. "Although readership and advertising response was encouraging in the early years, we have concluded that this economic market will not support our business expectations," President-CEO Charles H. Townsend said.
The March issue of Domino will be the magazine's last.

Ladies Home Journal Announces Redesign, New Philosophy
Today, Ladies’ Home Journal announced a redesign with its February issue and also said the magazine will have a “bold new voice”
and editorial philosophy. Ladies' Home Journal will now be
“modern, clean, approachable and uplifting,” said new editor Sally Lee.
Ladies' Home Journal, which is one of the oldest magazines--first published in February 1883--was redesigned about a year ago under former editor Diane Salvatore.

First Lady Obama to Appear on Vogue Magazine Cover
There's a rumor circulating that First Lady Michelle Obama will appear on an upcoming cover of Vogue magazine though the magazine has yet to confirm stating, "We're very interested in working with the First Lady." Some-time controversial photographer Annie Leibovitz who shoots for many Conde Nast magazines including Vanity Fair, was spotted leaving the Obama's hotel last week.

Teen Magazine Reduced to Annual Publication
Hearst Magazines announced this week the company will shutter Teen magazine's quarterly issues and the magazine's companion web site. However, Hearst will continue to publish the annual Teen Magazine Prom issue. Hearst Magazines also owns Seventeen magazine, which it acquired along with Teen magazine in 2003. Teen magazine's folding follows the recent downfalls of other teen magazines ElleGirl, CosmoGirl and Teen People.

Vogue Magazine Subject of New Documentary
A new documentary on the magazine considered the American fashion bible--Vogue--premiered at the Sundance Film Festival today. The documentary entitled "The September Issue" centers on Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and the magazine's eight-month time period leading up to its biggest issue of the year. Vogue and Wintour gave director R.J. Cutler rare access to the magazine's daily operations.

Esquire Magazine Tries Window Advertising on Cover
Esquire magazine is once again trying something innovative with its cover with its February issue. This time it isn't a digitally enhanced cover but a completely low-tech window, or flap in the middle of the cover, which invites readers to "Open here." Inside this window are teasers from articles inside the issue and of course, an advertisement.
