2008 Year-End Report Shows Magazine Ad Pages Down
Yesterday the Publishers Information Bureau reported year-end numbers for consumer magazines. As expected the findings were grim: advertising pages dropped 11.7 percent in 2008 when compared to 2007.
The drop in advertising picked up in the fourth quarter, as pages dropped more than 17 percent. The Publishers Information Bureau monitors ad page revenues and ad placements in consumer magazines and issues monthly and cumulative reports.

New York Times Refutes Atlantic Story
In the January/February issue of The Atlantic, the magazine ran an article "End Times" on the possible end of The New York Times. In return, New York Times senior vice president of corporate communications, Catherine Mathis wrote in a letter posted on the Romenesko site, "Your article "End Times," which speculates on whether The New York Times can survive the death of journalism, leaves a lot to be desired from the standpoint of . . . well, journalism."

OK! Magazine Not OK with Spears Coverage?
The rumor mill has churned out that OK! Magazine publisher Kent Brownridge severed ties with the Spears clan who in the past sold the celebrity magazine content exclusives. OK! Magazine denies the rumor, noting that Spears is currently on its cover.

Country Home Shuttered, Men's Vogue Revived
Meredith Corp announced it will shutter Country Home after the magazine's March/April issue. In other news, Conde Nast has found a way to breathe new life into the previously doomed Men's Vogue--it will appear as a reverse-bound issue attached to the April Vogue issue. This is the first time Vogue has published a reverse cover.

Publisher Ziff Davis No Longer in Print Mag Business
Publisher Ziff Davis Inc announced yesterday it’s selling its 1Up network of gaming sites to Hearst and shuttering Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine. The sell comes nearly six weeks after the company discontinued the print version of PC Magazine.
The longtime powerhouse publisher of hobbyist magazines began in 1927 in Chicago. Last year it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Over the years Ziff Davis published titles like Amazing Stories, Car and Driver, MacWeek, PC Week, Popular Photography, Popular Electronics and more. The company, which doesn't have any print titles left, will now focus on the PCMag.com network.

ESPN The Magazine's latest issue out January 12 features
two covers of the "True NFL MVP's of 2008: The New York Giants Offensive Line & The Tennessee Titans Defensive Line."
