Time magazine with its commemorative issue out today is the winner in the race to get a Michael Jackson tribute issue on the newsstands after the news broke Thursday of the King of Pop's death.
Time's tribute issue includes memories of the performer from friends and admirers like Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Tina Turner. The Time magazine Michael Jackson special issue was published in addition to the magazine's regular issue--not in place of it.
In the past, magazine commemorative issues including People magazine, have been top-sellers for the magazine industry including past issues honoring Princess Diana, John F. Kennedy, Jr. and the September 11, 2001 attacks.
As for Michael Jackson tribute issues, TV Guide's Michael Jackson/Farrah Fawcett commemorative issue will hit stands Thursday; we expect People magazine and Ebony/Jet who featured what is now Jackson's last interview as a collector's edition in December 2007, and others to follow suit. In addition, The New York Times reports that Rolling Stone magazine and Life will publish book-style commemorative issues.
What do you think? Will you be buying one or more Michael Jackson commemorative issues?
I got my Time one on Monday as soon as I could. Newsweek's "sorta" issue looked ripoffy, has him on the cover but just a few pages inside, I skipped that one. Will get the Rolling Stone and Life ones for sure!

Hey, thank you for reporting on this! We got word of it via Twitter. I'm glad they decided to do this (even if it does seem inevitable to my mind).. That issue's definitely going to make for a true keepsake!
I don't think 3 or so issues is too much for even an average fan, personally. :)

I bought all the commemorative issues that came out. Cost me about $150.00 but it was all worth it. They are truly amazing and have some very very beautiful pics. So glad I bought them.

The issue examines Jackson's life, death and career, which included hit records, as well as controversy and mystery. "His life is such a puzzle," she said. "The only thing that we can be certain about Michael Jackson is the brilliance of his music ... and that's why you do a cover of Time. He influenced so many, and his life tracked the arc of fame. The only thing you really knew about it was the brilliance."

Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit,and try not to improve or regulate anybody but myself.
