More Magazines: Magazines.com Adds Regional Magazines to Selection

Today we're starting a new blog series. We've been adding a slew of new magazines at Magazines.com each week and so we'd thought we'd let you know what we've added from time to time. Look for us to report on our new additions a few times a month. This month we've added a handful of city and regional magazines: Alaska, Charlotte (NC), Orlando and Northshore (MA) magazines. There's good news about city and regional magazines: Forbes magazine recently reported these magazines aren't taking quite the circulation hit as other genres of magazines are lately.

Commemorative Magazine Issues Boost Magazine Sales

Not surprisingly (but a little morbid) special commemorative issues honoring Michael Jackson are accounting for a much-needed boost in magazine sales. According to Ad Age, the sale of special Michael Jackson commemorative issues and books have added up to an extra $55 million in newsstand sales with every magazine from People and Us Weekly to Jet, Time and Newsweek publishing commemorative issues. Magazine sales are expected to be boosted again next week with issues honoring Senator Ted Kennedy; at this time both Time magazine and Newsweek are planning special tribute issues.

Family Circle Reaches Ad Gains for September Issue

There's more good news for the Meredith Corp. According to a recent report on ad percent gains in September, three of the publisher's magazine titles--Family Circle, Fitness and Traditional Home--are in the top five.

Magazine Round-Up: Vibe to Return, Ebony on Exhibit and Farewell to Civil Rights Journalist

It's been two months since Vibe magazine was shuttered and early this week the Vibe Lifestyle Network announced it has named publishing veteran Jermaine Hall as editor-in-chief of the re-launched Vibe magazine and Vibe.com. Jermaine Hall most recently served as editor-in-chief of King Magazine.

The folks at the Seacoast African American Cultural Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire are featuring an exhibit of six decades of African-American history, as chronicled by Ebony magazine. The exhibit's curators spent three months collecting the magazine's covers from people throughout the country. Ebony magazine has been published continuously since 1945.

William A. Emerson Jr., a fearless Southern journalist and author who wrote powerful articles about the civil rights, William Faulkner and the Ku Klux Klan among other things for Newsweek and also served as editor-in-chief for The Saturday Evening Post died last week after a stroke. He was 86. 

Glamour Magazine Gets Self-Confidence Right

This week the buzz over a photo in a women's magazine is not about the ethics of retouching a celebrity cover. Instead, the photo is of model Lizzi Miller, smiling and showing her not-so-perfect-belly that accompanies a story on body image and self-confidence called "What Everyone But You Sees About Your Body;" and according to Glamour magazine editor-in-chief Cindi Leive, readers are overjoyed with the photo of the woman on that looks like an average 12-14 size American woman.

Embedded Video Ads in Magazines?

In case you missed it, last week the Associated Press reported that Entertainment Weekly magazine will feature the first-ever video ad in a print magazine. The tiny-TV-like screen ad uses technology similar to what's used in music-playing cards. The first ads are for Pepsi and CBS and will be in Entertainment Weekly's September TV preview issue in a limited number of copies of some subscribers in New York and Los Angeles.

The Beatles to Dominate Magazine Covers?

In 1.5 weeks (Sept. 9) The Beatles Rock Band will be released and already a handful of magazines in the UK and Rolling Stone magazine in the U.S. have featured the Fab Four on their covers. We're expecting nothing less than a publicity deluge.

Vogue Magazine Documentary to Open Next Week

As we recently noted, this year's September fashion magazine issues are uncharacteristically slim, which perhaps makes next week's opening of "The September Issue," a documentary chronicling the production of Vogue magazine's September 2007 issue--which weighed almost five pounds--a little bittersweet. The documentary, which premiered at the Sundance Festival in January, is only being released in select cities for now. We haven't decided if we'll see it in the theaters when/if it makes to our city; perhaps we'll just watch "The Devil Wears Prada" one more time. Tell us, will you go to see this magazine documentary?

Is Time Magazine's Cover Story "The Myth About Exercise" Irresponsible?

This week's Time magazine cover story "The Myth About Exercise" is stirring up a lot of controversy and frustration among health, fitness and medical professionals.

In the article writer John Cloud attempts to make the case that while exercise does burn calories, it has the effect of stimulating hunger, thus canceling out its weight-loss benefits.Cloud cites a research study of 464 overweight women overseen by Dr. Timothy Church and published in the non-profit Public Library of Science journal. The study results found that the women who exercised didn't lose significantly more weight than the non-exercising women in the control group.

At a time when the majority of Americans are overweight or obese (let's not forget that obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer and type 2 diabetes) and preventative health care seems more important than ever, is Time's article irresponsible?
