Not Your Mama's Southern Living Magazine

Just like its sister magazine Cooking Light did with its September issue, Southern Living magazine has made some reader-suggested changes with its October issue, according to the editor's note.

Don't worry--the regional magazine is still very much Southern. However, the 43-year-old publication is uniting traditional Southern with modern Southern for its new editorial focus. The new column "Mama's Way or Your Way," is a reflection of this direction and features one dish with two recipes: the traditional Southern way and an easier-to-prepare, healthier way. October's dish is apple dumplings: "Mama's Way" includes classic homemade dough from scratch, while "Your Way" calls for the quicker dough: store-bought pie crust.

Other new columns include instruction on basic cooking and gardening techniques and "Made by Southern Hands," which features products and gifts by Southern artisans.

The editorial changes are only the second time such changes have occurred in the magazine's history, although the magazine did make some changes to health and beauty content last year.
